Park at West End

Downtown Park

The Park at West End is a pocket park of concentrated vintage charm on the west end of historic Garrison Avenue in downtown Fort Smith, Arkansas. An iconic 56-foot Ferris wheel that was built by the Eli Bridge Company. The Ferris wheel is 56 feet tall and holds up to 32 passengers.

The Ferris Wheel offers an unparalleled view of downtown Fort Smith, the Fort Smith National Historic Site, and the Arkansas River. The park’s carousel, built and hand-painted by the Bertazzon Company in Treviso, Italy, brings old-fashioned joy to riders of all ages. A covered arcade provides wholesome entertainment for kids and teenagers.

McClure Amphitheater

The McClure Amphitheater at Chaffee Crossing was re-dedicated on Saturday, September 17, 2011. It was originally established in 1953 on then Fort Chaffee. This outdoor amphitheater has a stunning views of the city of Fort Smith.

Massard Prairie Battlefield

This historic site was added to the Arkansas Register of Historic Places on November 7, 2001. The site remains today to honor the brave men on both sides who struggled here in 1864. Today, four major areas of the camp are preserved: The Parade Ground; Kitchen or Mess area; and the camps of Companies “B” and “D”. Each area is marked by a sign.

Fort Smith Dog Park

The Fort Smith Dog Park is dedicated to dogs and dog lovers.

Like most dog parks, our purpose is to provide off-leash exercise and socialization opportunities for our four legged companions while promoting responsible dog ownership through events and programs.

This temporary park was established through the efforts of the City of Fort Smith Parks & Recreation Department and the Fort Smith Airport Commission.

Agility Equipment

To ensure the success and availability of the Dog Park, please read and follow the following rules:

  • Owners must carry a leash at all times. Please leash and unleash your dog in the double gated area. Never carry your dog into the Dog Park.
  • Only one owner and his/her dog (s) in holding area at a time.
  • All spike collars must be removed prior to entry into the park.
  • Dogs must be in sight of their owner at all times.
  • Each adult guardian may bring a maximum of 3 dogs and/or children to the park at one time. Babies/toddlers are not recommended.
  • All dogs must wear a collar with identification at all times, have current vaccinations, negative fecal, and be at least 6 months of age for health and safety reasons.
  • Spayed/Neutered dogs are always recommended. They are less prone to fighting
  • Never bring a female dog in season to the park.
  • Any dog exhibiting aggressive behavior must be removed from the park.
  • Sick dogs are prohibited.
  • Owners must pick up after their dog utilizing the Mutt Mitt dispenser and properly dispose of dog waste in containers provided.
  • Owners must stop dogs from digging and immediately fill holes.
  • Do not bring food, glass containers, strollers, carriages, bicycles, skates, roller blades or childrens toys into the park.
  • Smoking is prohibited.
  • Alcohol is prohibited.
  • Children should not run with the dogs or chase them while in the park.
  • If your children create problems for owners and their dogs, you may be asked by participants to leave the Dog Park for safety’s sake. Please remember this is a Dog Park and not a playground for children.
  • When leaving the park, remove all toys, tennis balls, or other personal items.
  • Close both gates upon entering or exiting.
  • Observe park hours. The Dog Park is daylight use only.
  • Owners are legally responsible for any damage, injury, or illness your dog (s) may cause to itself, other dogs, other people or yourself.
  • Use at your own risk. The City of Fort Smith is not responsible for injuries.

Ruth Armstrong Nature Area

On February 25, 2012 a total of 33 volunteers worked in Ruth Armstrong Nature Area for a grand total of 147 volunteer hours. The following groups involved were:

  • Gamma Phi Beta Sorority
  • Citizens of Fort Smith
